New Employee, Nick Cook

Jewell Engineering Consultants (JEC) is pleased to announce the hiring of a new employee, Nick Cook. Nick is a recent graduate from George Mason University with a Master’s degree in Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering. While completing his Master’s thesis he presented "Self Organized Criticality of Interdependent Infrastructure Systems" at the Trans-Atlantic INFRADAY: Conference on Applied Infrastructure Modeling and Policy Analysis. The conference was sponsored by the University of Dresden (Germany)/University of Maryland and held in College Park, MD. In 2004 he received his Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Mississippi where he tested humidity sensors for later use in projects at CERN in Switzerland.

Following graduation, he worked for the National Center for Physical Acoustics, where he assisted in researching new land mine-detecting technology involving Laser-Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) technology to excite acoustical modes in buried objects. At JEC Nick will be working primarily in the preparation of Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP’s) for Municipal operations.

Nick and his fiancée moved to Hickory, NC from Fairfax, Virginia where he recently passed the FE exam and gained experience as a structural BMP inspector for the County of Fairfax. Drawing on GIS mapping skills, he also helped the county develop an inventory of undocumented features in pursuit of the county’s compliance with NPDES Phase II permitting, a daunting task in the face of rapid development in the area. JEC is looking forward to the contributions of this young individual as both he and JEC grow towards a bright future.
